Verfilming van het eerste deel van de trilogie van J.R.R. Tolkien door de Nieuw-Zeelandse regisseur Peter Jackson. De twee andere delen komen in december 2002 en 2003 in roulatie. Het is het duurste filmproject aller tijden, waarin hobbit Frodo in het bezit komt van een bijzondere ring. Frodo moet een lange tocht maken om de ring te kunnen vernietigen zodat hij niet in handen valt van Sauron die met deze ring iedereen tot slaaf kan maken. Pauline Kleyer (Volkskrant 20-12-'01): 'The fellowship of the ring is een overrompelend begin. (...) Topspektakel in Midden-aarde.' De film kreeg 13 Oscarnominaties waarvan er 4 werden toegekend. De tweede disc bevat veel extra's (120 min.).

Sir Peter Robert Jackson (born 31 October 1961) is a New Zealand film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is best known as the director, writer, and producer of the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001–03) and the Hobbit trilogy (2012–14), both of which are adapted from the novels of the same name by J. R.
